Sonic 3 hit the theaters last January 1st, directed once again by Jeff Fowler. This is our review.
Almost three years after the excellent second chapter, and interspersed with the spin-off series “Knuckles“, the film Sonic 3 (here the trailer) presents itself as the first blockbuster of 2025 (in fact it debuted on January 1st), and it does so in an absolutely spectacular way, with laughter, action and a truly first-rate level of entertainment.
In this third film of the series inspired by the famous SEGA videogames, the super-fast alien hedgehog has started teaming up with Tails and his former enemy Knuckles, and in the meantime lives a quiet daily life in the company of his “human family”. The loving and familiar routine, however, is broken when Shadow, a dark and sinister version of Sonic, with a past of suffering and loss, appears on Earth.
Sonic 3 Movie Story:
Without forgetting his target audience (let's face it, this is a saga for children), director Jeff Fowler once again creates a product with a fair amount of quality, and above all capable of captivating even the adult audience. In Sonic 3, in fact, the declared objective remains pure and simple family entertainment, the difference is underlined by the presence of intriguing subplots, sometimes represented by mature themes, such as abandonment and the loss of family affections.
The new film of this successful saga does not get lost in simple frills, it actually moves through a frenetic narration, funny gags, hilarious references to modern pop culture, and darker moments (mostly those relating to Shadow's past), without ever leaving room for moments of tiredness. And this is what is asked of a film like Sonic 3, especially after what the first two chapters represented.
Following the same line as the first two chapters, Sonic 3 also focuses much of its entertaining power on the acting talent of Jim Carrey, here in the dual role of Ivo Robotnik and his grandfather Gerald. The actor is in fact, like the excellent characterization offered to the new character Shadow, the true backbone of a saga that has now entered right into the recent history of Hollywood, and which aims to have a more than bright future. The puns, the funny faces, and the sketch with "his older self" are probably one of the reasons to buy a ticket for a film of this kind.
Finally, on the technical side, everything is done to perfection. The animations of the alien protagonists and the special effects linked to the most spectacular sequences offer the right combination of CGI and practical effects, all of which are to the advantage of fans of the genre.
Sonic 3 Review:
Despite the nice words, Sonic 3 cannot be considered a masterpiece in the broad sense. In our opinion, this is a film that should be watched for what it represents, that is, an excellent product for families, born from a successful video game saga, but for children. With these premises, the New Sonic Movie should be considered an excellent entertainment product.
By the way, Sonic 4 is already in production.
