Matka Movie Review: Hero Varun Tej, who chose diverse stories and made films at the beginning of his career, has recently changed his choice of films. He has taken a turn towards commercial cinema for some time, but his recent films could have given better results. This time, Varun Tej came in front of the audience with 'Matka' aiming for commercial success. Karun Kumar directed this film with a period story. Has this film made by him, who received success with the film 'Palasa' earlier, pleased the audience? What is the story of this film? Let's find out.
Story:
Vasu (Varun Tej) belongs to a family who came as refugees from Burma to Vizag. He accidentally kills a man in a fight over a food parcel and goes to jail as a juvenile delinquent. The jailer Narayana Murthy (Ravi Shankar) fights with Vasu in the prison, bets on him, and extorts money. After completing his sentence and being released from jail, he joins a coconut shop in Purna Market.
Coconut merchant Appala Reddy (Ajay Ghosh) and KB Reddy (John Vijay) beat up the man, and KB Reddy tries to kill Appala Reddy. But in that fight, Vasu beats KB Reddy and gets closer to his rival Nanibabu (Kishore). He starts a business with him as a partner. During Anati's time, with Nani Babu's support, Purna became the leader of the market. Vasu, who had gone to Mumbai to deal with clothes, changed his mind and started a matka business.
Vasu, who has become a Matka Don in a short period, will face some unexpected problems? The central government will send CBI people to take action against Vasu after seeing incidents like hoarding of illegal goods and people committing suicide due to matka? What happened after that? Will the Vasu Matka business continue? How does Sujatha (Meenakshi Chaudhary) come into this story? What happened between these two? What did Sahu (Naveen Chandra) do as a CBI officer? That is the rest of the story
Analysis:
The director has chosen the story of 1968, Vizag as the background for this film. He tried to show the matka and other businesses going on at that time. The story of this film is about the rise of the hero from the level of zero to a don. But many such stories have already appeared on the silver screen. This also falls into that category. But because the director did not write the screenplay of this film strongly, no scene looks very interesting.
The emotions and connectivity that should be there in a story like this are missing in 'Matka'. But the new point shown by the director in this film is that an anonymous hero has pushed the country's economy into crisis with the matka business, and this point is clear as the scenes are plain. Although the first half seems to be okay, the second half is not very thrilling as it is very weak and routine.
When there is a negative touch in the character of the hero, the audience must connect with the character to travel with that character. In this movie, it seems that Vasu comes and goes with the character like that, but the audience does not get any chance to connect with the character. The hero's childhood life .. going to jail .. and soon becoming the head of Kotla all seem cinematic, but that struggle is not visible in the hero's characterization.
The scenes in the second half are far from logical. Especially the lack of a proper lead role in this film is a big minus. That's why the action scenes also seemed bland. Characterizations should be strong when choosing a story like this. However, the director did not seem to focus on that side. And in the pre-climax, the story of the goat told by Vasu's daughter is like a test of the audience's patience. Overall the matka remained bland without any sparks and thrilling elements.
Actors Performance:
Varun Tej's performance as Vasu is good. Appearing in three different variations, Varun Tej was impressed with his range. But Varun's getup didn't seem natural in an older role. The heroine Meenakshi's role does not have much scope in terms of acting. She didn't even look glamorous like that. Sophia Nora Fatehi's beauty show is sure to impress the lad. The roles of Ajay Ghosh, Naveen Chandra, Saloni, and Kishore were not very impressive. There are flaws in the way the characters are cast. Jeevee Prakash's music and background music are not good. The camera work is good. The production values are in line with the story.
Finally... Although the point of this story is interesting, the story is written with the periodical backdrop of Matka gambling, but the story does not thrill the audience as the director has failed to lead the stories and design the characters. There was no curiosity anywhere in the boring story.
