Shōgun Season 2 and 3 are reportedly in development at FX and Hulu. Great news for Shōgun fans: the series may have confirmed production of the second and third seasons. This announcement comes after Hiroyuki Sanada, starring as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, signed to return for the second season, marking a positive sign for the future of the series.

Shōgun: the confirmation of the next seasons seems to be almost certain... but with a small detail

According to reports, seasons 2 and 3 are currently in development with the full involvement of the estate of James Clavell, author of the original novel on which the series is based. The writing team for Shōgun season 2 will begin work this summer, with showrunners Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo still at the helm. Michaela Clavell, executive producer of the first season and guardian of Clavell's interests, will retain her role, while Sanada will continue to serve as both star and producer.

However, there's one detail hanging over this news: Variety's report specifies that this is not a formal renewal, and no additional production has been scheduled yet. Shōgun is not just a work of fiction, but a dramatization of real historical events in 17th-century Japan. Many of the characters, although fictionalized, are based on authentic historical figures. The original novel focused primarily on the fate of the main protagonists, leaving room for expansion of the narrative in future seasons.
