Mr. and Mrs. Smith return without their protagonists, but the possible changes are exciting!

Amazon Prime Video has renewed the series Mr. and Mrs. Smith for a season 2, but according to sources, the first season stars, Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, will not return. Glover will however continue to serve as co-creator and executive producer of the series alongside Francesca Sloane, who will return as showrunner. Glover recently announced that he will embark on a world tour as Childish Gambino from August 2024 through February 2025.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith, why do Maya Erskine and Donald Glover leave the series?

Amazon declined to comment on the possible absence of Glover and Erskine, while their representatives did not immediately respond to Variety's request for comment. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, said: “We are thrilled to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” for our global Prime Video customers. The success of the first season, with its modern and seductive retelling of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane. We are proud to offer you another season full of unforgettable trips and new adventures.”

Given the bloody ending of the first season, it's not entirely surprising that Glover and Erskine aren't present in the second season. The series could take an anthology direction and feature a new couple who adopt the names Jane and John Smith, as Glover and Erskine's characters did earlier in the series. The announcement was made during Amazon's first upfront presentation to advertisers in New York. Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a retelling of the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The series is produced by New Regency and Amazon MGM Studios.

According to the official description of the series:

“In the first season of 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith,' two lonely strangers land jobs at a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travel, and a dream house in Manhattan. The condition? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now married, John and Jane face a high-stakes mission each week while also navigating new milestones in their relationship. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they begin to have real feelings for each other. What is riskier: espionage or marriage?”

The series received critical praise upon its release in February, with a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In her review for Variety, Alison Herman wrote: “With a few more hours of runtime, ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith builds John, Jane, and their relationship into something worth appreciating. This version may not make as much news as its predecessor, but it stands up to criticism much better.”
